OIV Centenary Photo Contest Winners Announced: Per Karlsson Wins Special Mention

OIV

In an illustrious recognition of his talents and dedication to viticulture, Per Karlsson, a revered figure in the Wine Travel Awards community and a staunch supporter since its inception, has been honored at the OIV (The International Organisation of Vine and Wine) Centenary Photo Contest. This contest, established to mark the centenary of the OIV and named after the organization’s former general director Pau Roca, focused on the theme of climate change’s impact on viticulture and was sponsored by Vinos de la Luz.

Karlsson, who is not only a co-owner of the BKWine’s travel agency but also a seasoned judge at the Wine Travel Awards since its inaugural year, captivated the jury with his striking image, “Flooded Vineyards in Bourgueil.” His photograph vividly portrays the vineyards in Bourgueil, Loire, France, where the vines of Cabernet Franc are deeply submerged in water following heavy rains—a stark illustration of the climate challenges confronting today’s viticulture.

This accolade is particularly noteworthy as it underscores Karlsson’s profound connection to the wine industry and his continuous efforts to highlight the pressing issues it faces through his evocative photography. His photo was awarded a special mention, spotlighting the severe issue of extreme weather conditions and their impact on vine growth, and emphasizing the urgency of addressing climate change within the industry.

Alongside Karlsson, other winners such as Kristian Kielmayer, Michel Joly, and Christophe Der, were celebrated for their contributions which shed light on the diverse ways climate change is impacting wine regions across the globe. The Wine Travel Awards proudly acknowledges Per Karlsson’s accomplishment and his ongoing commitment to enriching our understanding of the wine world through both his role as a judge and his powerful photography.

His outstanding work not only contributes significantly to the discourse on climate resilience in viticulture but also enhances the global wine community’s appreciation for the art and science of winemaking in the face of environmental challenges.
