Cité du Vin – a record for the number of tourists in 2023

France

In 2023, the unique Museum of Wine in Bordeaux – Cité du Vin, received a record 391,000 visitors including about 6000 professionals serving a corporate event, despite the fact that the museum was closed for one month for the renewal of the permanent exhibition.

By the end of 2023, since its opening, Cité du Vin, the nominee and winner of the Wine Travel Awards, has welcomed more than 2.7 million visitors, more than half of whom are foreigners. Local residents say that the Museum attracts them with various programs of cultural events.

In 2022, as part of the premiere Bordeaux Wine Week, Cité du Vin hosted the presentation of the Wine Travel Awards and an exclusive tasting from Vinos de La Luz (three wines received platinum medals and 97 points at the Decanter World Wine Awards 2022).

The permanent exhibition has been updated for the first time since the Museum was opened: new multimedia productions, new equipment and a new stage appeared. Two tasting offers have been added to the range of cultural events: the Via Sensoria Sensory tasting tour, opening in the spring of 2023, and the Bordeaux 360° tasting master class.

“These new offers immediately won over the hearts of our visitors. Their many positive comments and ever-increasing satisfaction recognise the hard work carried out by our teams. Renewing our cultural offering was a gamble. We are delighted to say that it paid off!” says Philippe Massol, Managing Director.

97,000 people visited the Museum in July/August 2023, and more than 42,000 in October (the highest number recorded in October since the opening of the Cité du Vin). 51% of the visitors from the total number for the year are foreigners. Among foreigners, the largest percentage fell to the Spanish, British and Americans, followed by Germans and Italians. Other visitors are distributed as follows: 29% tourists were from all over France, 11% – residents of Bordeaux, 9% – day-trippers.

More than 356,000 people visited the new permanent exhibition, which opened on February 4, and almost 24,000 visited the Via Sensoria Sensory tasting tour (opened from early April to early November). The day-long tasting seminars attracted almost 11,000 participants. The evening cultural program, aimed at local residents and Bordeaux residents in particular, was also popular: more than 2,500 people took part in wine tasting seminars, 4,000 attended various conferences, screenings, Gourmet Cinema evenings, etc.

Today, more than 90% of visitors recommend their friends and relatives to visit the Museum, and the average score assigned to the permanent exhibition is almost 8.75/10, which is 0.75 points higher than in 2022.

Cité du Vin is open daily from 10am.
