The Taste of South Africa
South African wines continue to impress: new vintages delight with their flavor and quality, while the country strengthens its reputation as one of the world’s most interesting wine regions. South Africa is also a nominee of the Wine Travel Awards and the proud recipient of the special Judge’s Choice Award.
The 2025 season was particularly notable: from 86,544 hectares of vineyards, 1.244 million tons of grapes were harvested – 11% more than in 2024. Favorable weather ensured even ripening, balanced acidity, and deep colors. Winemakers highlight Pinotage, Shiraz, and Chardonnay in particular.
Cinsault is also in the spotlight. Previously used mainly in blends, this variety has become a leading trend for summer 2025. Young winemakers are crafting light, fruity wines with minimal intervention – a “new lightness” style quickly gaining popularity both in South Africa and abroad.
Vineyard revival is also underway. On the Western Cape, a new movement is emerging. Winemakers Duncan Savage, Eben Sadie, and Rudiger Gretschel are restoring forgotten vineyards, especially in the Piekenierskloof region. They work with varieties that were previously overlooked – such as Garnacha and Palomino. Their philosophy emphasizes sustainability, respect for old vines, and the pursuit of authentic local expression.
