France: A Diverse Wine Country and Its WTA Nominees
France has long been recognized as one of the most diverse and influential wine-producing countries in the world. From the prestigious vineyards of Bordeaux and Burgundy to the sun-drenched landscapes of Provence and Languedoc, the country offers an incredible variety of wine styles, terroirs, and traditions. This diversity is reflected not only in its viticulture but also in the evolving trends in wine consumption, production, and trade.
France remains a top wine-producing nation, consistently ranking among global leaders in volume and quality. In 2023, it produced around 45 million hectoliters of wine, maintaining its key market position. However, domestic consumption is gradually declining, with growing interest in organic, biodynamic, and low-alcohol wines. Younger consumers are increasingly drawn to sustainable practices, natural wines, and eco-friendly packaging.
Wine tourism in France continues to thrive, attracting enthusiasts from around the world to its renowned wine regions. Bordeaux, Burgundy, Champagne, and the Loire Valley remain top destinations, offering immersive experiences such as vineyard tours, cellar tastings, food pairings, and winemaking workshops. Many wineries are investing in luxury accommodations, fine dining, and eco-friendly initiatives to enhance the visitor experience. Additionally, there is a growing trend toward off-the-beaten-path wine tourism, with regions like Languedoc, Alsace, and Jura gaining popularity for their authentic and less-commercialized experiences.
Just as France boasts a rich and varied wine landscape, the Wine Travel Awards (WTA) community features an equally diverse representation of industry professionals from the country. Our French nominees include renowned wineries, innovative wine tourism projects, expert sommeliers, and influential wine journalists, all contributing to the dynamic evolution of the wine sector.
We introduce the outstanding French nominees for this year’s Wine Travel Awards, highlighting their contributions to the global wine and wine tourism industries. We invite you to vote for our nominees in their profiles!
Florence Authier Meuric – Ambassador/Ambassador of the Year
Florence’s wine story began in childhood, with her first taste at age 10 during her communion meal. Watching her Uncle Maurice savor a fine Bordeaux, she eagerly asked for a glass – only to spit it out immediately. Laughing, her uncle reassured her, “You’ll appreciate it when you’re older,” and he was right.
When Florence joined Maison Bessière’s export team in 1999, she rediscovered a sense of family in the wine world. Over 25 years later, her passion remains strong as she continues to promote her partners’ wines with dedication.
Her career has brought her close to legends like Gérard Depardieu and Pierre Richard, fulfilling childhood dreams while organizing wine events and international promotions. She embraces the art of living, celebrating gastronomy, culture, and the “French touch” in everything she does.
A true connector, Florence has managed a Prowein stand for over 12 years, creating opportunities for winemakers. She is also a judge at Concours Expression des Vignerons Bio de Nouvelle Aquitaine, believing that wine is more than a drink – it’s a unifying experience that speaks to the heart.
