The best wine for Fasoli Gino’s 100th anniversary and the debut of the PIWI harvest
Fasoli Gino is a winery from Verona that has become a pioneer in organic winemaking. Today, the winery operates according to biodynamic principles and is constantly looking to the future. Particular attention is paid to the Equalitas certification, which takes into account environmental, social and economic aspects. The winery exports to 91 international markets – from Switzerland to Japan, from Germany to Canada, including the United States.
To mark its 100th anniversary, the winery has released a very special red wine. “The anniversary wine is the culmination – the quintessence – of all our single-varietal red wines,” explain Natalino Fasoli and Matteo Fasoli, representing the third and fourth generations of winemakers in Colognola ai Colli, in the Illasi Valley on the eastern edge of the Veronese region.
Crafted from hand-harvested, partially dried grapes, this red wine is a blend of Corvina, Corvinone, Merlot, Pinot Noir, and Cabernet Sauvignon. Each variety is aged separately in oak barrels for an extended period – between 36 and 48 months – before being blended.
The winemakers describe it as: “The best of the best, a pinnacle expression of our Merlot, Corvina, Corvinone, Cabernet, Pinot Noir, and Cabernet Sauvignon. If these wines were a family, I like to think of this one as the child who brings together all their distinctive traits in a single, unified voice.”
In 2026, Fasoli Gino – whose production reaches about 600,000 bottles annually of certified organic and vegan wines – will harvest for the first time its new PIWI vines, cultivated from fungus-resistant grape varieties.
The winery has dedicated 4 hectares to this new viticulture. As the team notes, “This approach significantly reduces copper use, cuts diesel consumption, and decreases interventions by up to two-thirds.”
According to Natalino Fasoli, “This could be a turning point for organic viticulture, since PIWI grapes come from seed selection without involving GMOs. These wines offer a reduced environmental footprint and, when produced with care, can absolutely rival traditional wines – be they red or white.”
Since 1986, Fasoli Gino has banned chemical fertilizers, and since 2006, it has adopted biodynamic methods.
The winery collects between 3,000 and 4,000 cubic meters of rainwater, 80% of which is reused for irrigation and other purposes, such as bottle washing. Among other sustainability initiatives are the use of lightweight glass and 100% recycled paper for packaging.
