Matteo Soria Winery #141
Top-notch technologies and ancient traditions
In the South East of Piedmont, in the Langhe region, on top of a hill, you find Castiglione Tinella. With 92% of land cultivated with Moscato vines, it is one of the first Italian villages with the highest density of vineyards. The Soria Estate has been there since the 19th century and it has a strong link with the surrounding land and the traditions handed down from father to son. The Estate is located in Frazione San Martino, a prestigious area for Moscato grapes since the beginning of the 17th century. The San Martino’s hill presents light slopes and is rich of “white soil” (a local synonym to identify a soil with a lot of sand), which gives the grapes and hence the wine excellent perfumes characteristic of the Castilgione Tinella’s Moscato d’Asti. Along the years it has reached extraordinary quality levels thanks to the diffusion of the modern oenological technology, in particular the one linked to the cold chain which has permitted maintaining the aromas and flavours of the grapes in the wine. All wines are submitted to strict controls to guarantee that an exceptional product arrives on your table.
A family-oriented tradition
Presently, Matteo Soria owns the winery. Sebastiano Soria, the great grandfather of Matteo, found the estate and produced excellent wines. During the first years of the 20th century, Giovanni Soria, grandfather of Matteo, acquired the estate and continued his father’s work. He built a more prominent winery in 1960. Later in the 70s, Sergio, father of Matteo acquired the winery and turned it into a larger winery equipped with modern machinery. After graduating from a prestigious oenological school, Matteo extended the winery and became the leading producer of Moscato D’Asti. It should be noted that Matteo Soria is the only winery that produces the Brut. In the year 2014, Matteo started building another winery, near the old one, to increase the space for various production processes.

Our group arrived in the late afternoon, just in time for a tour with Matteo Soria, a vertical tasting of several vintages of Moscato at his new tasting room and sweeping views of the vineyards at sunset… Complemented with salty prosciutto and a selection of hard, flavorful cheeses, four vintages of Moscato d’Asti from 2005 to 2018 and just-pressed “Moscato juice” from 2019 were poured. Each was a compelling expression of Moscato and as I explored vintage variations, I kept wondering why more winelovers aren’t sipping this refreshing sparkling wine
