WTA connecting people: Robert Joseph interviews Giorgi Iukuridze of SHABO Winery.

Ukraine

Our mission at Wine Travel Awards is not only to promote wine culture and wine tourism all over the world, but also to connect people working in the wine industry. We are sure that this networking opportunity is very important in the international perspective. Here’s yet another example of such collaboration.

Meininger’s Wine Business International, one of the most reputable international wine, trade and business media, has published an interview with Giorgi Iukuridze, co-founder of SHABO, Ukraine’s leading winery, initiated by Mr. Robert Joseph, one of the most experienced and renowned international wine experts,  the founder of the prestigious London International Wine Challenge competition, in which SHABO has had the honour to participate more than once, winning quite a generous number of medals. Decanter magazine named him as one of the 50 people who made a major influence on wine consumption in the 21st century. He is an editorial consultant and columnist for many reputable wine media, and the author of several dozen books. Mr. Joseph is one of the judges of the international Wine Travel Awards 2021-2022 competition, of which SHABO is one of the winners. So their acquaintance, as well as this feature, were not a coincidence.

In his interview, Mr. Joseph is focusing on Ukrainian winemaking in war times. What is the Ukrainian wine market like today? How do the vine growers tend to the vineyards? How do winemakers deal with supplying bottles, cork and other necessary wine production items from abroad? How do they deliver products to exhibitions, competitions, and is it possible at all? What’s up with exports?

It is an honor for us to share this story from Ukraine. Giorgi Iukuridze did not only talk about the troubles, pain and challenges of the war, but also about how the whole country, including Ukrainian winemakers, is working for the Victory.
