Marking 100 Years of the OIV with Ukrainian Flavors in Burgundy
Excitement is in the air as we approach a landmark celebration in the renowned Burgundy wine region!
Tomorrow, October 16th, the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV) marks its centennial with an extraordinary showcase of Ukrainian viticulture. In a tasteful tribute to 100 years of wine excellence, a select tasting of five exquisite Ukrainian wines will take place, handpicked by an expert committee including the chief editor of Drinks+, Olga Pinevich-Todoriuk.
Among the wines selected are four made from Ukraine’s flagship grape variety, Odesa Black (“Odeskyi Chornyi”), alongside a special dessert wine from the Tairov Institute. Together, these wines highlight the rich diversity of Ukraine’s terroir and showcase the full potential of Ukrainian winemaking.
Amidst the celebratory atmosphere, Nataliia Burlachenko, an esteemed Wine Travel Awards nominee, steps into the spotlight. As a key member of the Ukrainian delegation, she will delve into the complex profile of the Odesa Black grape, developed in the mid-20th century (1950s) at the Ukrainian Research Institute of Viticulture and Winemaking, now named after its founder, V. E. Tairov. Odesa Black has become a cornerstone of Ukrainian winemaking, and Nataliia’s presentation will offer an in-depth exploration of its sensory attributes and technical nuances. Her showcase will reflect a harmonious blend of tradition and modern winemaking techniques, highlighting the distinctiveness of this remarkable variety.
This event offers Ukraine a unique platform to introduce its wines to an international audience and solidify its position on the global wine stage. As Nataliia Burlachenko notes, Odesa Black has the potential to become a symbol of Ukrainian winemaking, embodying the country’s rich heritage and future potential.
