Wine Travel Awards`pearls of Oceania
Over the four years of its existence, the Wine Travel Awards project has gathered under its roof and presented to the wine community nominees from more than forty countries of the world. Our community includes participants from all continents. What do you know about Oceania, its unique wines and wonderful people? Meet the Wine Travel Awards nominees: Marianna Sigala, Professor of Marketing and Director of the International Hotel School, University of Newcastle, Australia and Cloudy Bay Winery from New Zealand.
Professor Marianna Sigala – Wine & Food Influencer/Author of the Year
Her academic credentials are combined with her professional experience in the tourism industry. She is a widely published and multi-awarded authority in the fields of Information & Communication Technologies (ICT) in tourism and hospitality, as well as in wine tourism. She is the author of three books in wine tourism, and she gave several presentations in international conferences. Marianna Sigala has a long record of leadership and participation in international research projects about tourism as well as wine tourism. For example, she has collaborated with the Council of Europe on a wine tourism entrepreneurship in Ukraine and Moldova, and delivered wine tourism projects in South Australia. She is the co-editor of the Journal of Service Theory & Practice, and the Editor-In-Chief of the Journal of Hospitality & Tourism Management. In 2016, she was awarded the prestigious EuroCHRIE Presidents’ Award for her lifetime contributions and achievements to tourism and hospitality education. Since 2020, Professor Sigala has also been as Research Fellow of CAUTHE.
Cloudy Bay Winery – The Visiting Card of the Country/Brand – the Visiting Card of the Country
So this year, New Zealand is represented at the Wine Travel Awards by the winery Cloudy Bay. The winery has two locations: Marlborough and Central Otago. In Central Otago, vineyards are farmed organically. Selected Estate blocks in Marlborough are trialing organic practices to roll out across the remaining vineyards. The main slogan of Cloudy Bay team is «Quality is our obsession». Cloudy Bay is a founding member of Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand. In October 2024, Cloudy Bay unveiled its highly anticipated 40th vintage of Sauvignon Blanc, marking a significant milestone that highlights its lasting legacy and pivotal role in elevating New Zealand’s wine industry. Renowned for its vibrant and flavorful Sauvignon Blanc, Cloudy Bay has become synonymous with the distinctive terroir of Marlborough.
Overall, New Zealand’s wine industry is export-oriented, with wine being one of the country’s top ten export commodities. In 2023, of the approximately 360 million liters of wine produced in New Zealand, about 315 million were sold internationally. New Zealand wines are distinguished by their brightness and unique character. Thanks to the special climate, territory, soils, and creative winemakers, special wines are born.
