Ukraine: The Land of Heroic Winemaking

Ukraine

In fact, Ukraine – one of the most fertile countries in Europe – has a climate favorable for growing vines across its entire territory. Just ten years ago, planting vineyards in the northern regions was seen as a sensation, but today it has become the norm.

Yet, Ukrainian winemakers today work under extreme conditions, displaying, without exaggeration, true heroism. And it’s not about steep mountain slopes or scorching droughts. The country is suffering from russian aggression, which means that people go to work after sleepless nights under shelling, encounter mines in the vineyards, and see their warehouses and enterprises destroyed by enemy missiles.

Big Wines

Despite the ongoing war and economic difficulties, Ukrainian winemakers are making a mark on the global stage – crafting award-winning wines and expanding into international markets such as the UK, USA, Japan, Poland, and the Baltic states.

With five key wine regions – Zakarpattia, Bessarabia, the Black Sea Region, Zaporizhzhia, and Crimea (temporarily occupied) – as well as new northern vineyards, Ukraine is proving to be an Old World winemaking region with a new identity. From historic indigenous grapes like Telti Kuruk, Kokur, and Odesa Black to the emerging northern terroirs producing vibrant whites, rosés, and sparkling wines, Ukraine’s wine scene is growing stronger each year.

Wines of the Silver Land

Beyond winemaking, Ukraine’s wine industry is a symbol of resilience, innovation, and unity, with professionals across different fields – winemakers, sommeliers, educators, event organizers, and importers – working together to promote Ukrainian wine worldwide. The Wine Travel Awards (WTA) recognizes these pioneers, who, despite all odds, continue to shape the future of Ukraine’s wine scene.

Now, it’s time to support the visionaries who are shaping Ukraine’s wine industry.
