South African Wine Industry Focuses on Premium Growth Amid Global Market Challenges

South Africa

South Africa, a TOP-5 Nominee by Votes in the Region of the Year category at Wine Travel Awards 2025–2026, is increasingly aligning its wine industry with the global trend toward premiumisation.

As worldwide wine consumption continues to decline, producers are shifting their attention from volume-driven sales to wines that highlight origin, terroir, craftsmanship and regional identity. Industry experts note that consumers are becoming more selective, favouring quality and authenticity over quantity.

According to representatives of Steenberg Vineyards, South African wine has traditionally been recognised for offering strong value in international markets. Today, however, producers are placing greater emphasis on differentiation and premium positioning to meet evolving consumer expectations.

Market conditions remain challenging. Global oversupply and growing competition in export destinations have created additional pressure on lower-priced wine categories. Premium wines, by contrast, have shown greater resilience and continue to attract consumers seeking distinctive products and meaningful experiences.

Another important driver of change is the behaviour of younger wine drinkers. Millennials and Gen Z consumers are generally drinking less alcohol but are showing stronger interest in sustainability, provenance and the stories behind the wines they choose.

South Africa is also strengthening its focus on regional identity through certification systems such as Wine of Origin (WO) and Integrated Production of Wine (IPW), which support traceability, sustainability and a stronger connection between wines and their place of origin.

Industry leaders believe that the country’s diverse terroirs, winemaking heritage and commitment to quality provide a strong foundation for South Africa’s continued development as one of the world’s respected premium wine-producing regions.
