Mastroberardino Introduces Its First Metodo Classico Sparkling Wines
Italian winery Mastroberardino has introduced its first Metodo Classico sparkling wines, marking a new chapter in the estate’s 147-year history. The historic Italian estate is the Public Voting Winner of the Wine Travel Awards 2025–2026 in the Art & History Object category.
The debut collection includes two Pas Dosé labels aged on the lees for 30 months: Ripe d’Altura, an Irpinia Bianco Spumante DOC Blanc de Blancs made from 70% Falanghina and 30% Greco, and Ell’èNoir, an Irpinia Aglianico Vinificato in Bianco Spumante DOC Blanc de Noirs produced entirely from Aglianico.
According to Piero Mastroberardino, work on the sparkling wine project began in 2021. The winery employs a perpetual reserve system to build greater depth and complexity, while future releases are expected to remain on the lees for 48-60 months.
Both wines are produced exclusively from free-run juice and fermented in a combination of stainless steel tanks, tonneaux and barriques before secondary fermentation in bottle. While Ripe d’Altura highlights freshness, precision and vibrant acidity, Ell’èNoir offers a more structured and mineral expression of Aglianico, revealing the variety’s potential for premium sparkling wine production.
The visual identity of the new range also reflects the concept behind the wines. Each bottle features a peel-away label revealing original artwork: a golden sun for Ripe d’Altura, symbolising light and energy, and a silver moon for Ell’èNoir, referencing both the grape’s origins and its deeper, more restrained character.
Founded in 1878, Mastroberardino is widely recognised for its role in preserving Campania’s indigenous grape varieties, including Aglianico, Greco and Fiano. The release of Ripe d’Altura and Ell’èNoir represents the winery’s first venture into the Metodo Classico category while remaining firmly rooted in the identity of Irpinia.
