Chateau Montelena Invests in the Future of Its Iconic Chardonnay
The historic winery Chateau Montelena, the WTA nominee in The Visiting Card of the Country/Brand – the Visiting Card of the Country, renowned for its triumph at the 1976 Judgment of Paris, has taken a major step in its evolution: it has acquired 73 acres of land in the Carneros AVA, nestled at the base of Mount Veeder. This new vineyard will become a vital source of grapes for Montelena’s signature Chardonnay, which the estate aims to elevate even further.
Planting is scheduled to begin in 2026. The site features red volcanic soils and exceptional drainage – conditions ideal for cultivating white grapes with a distinctly expressive sense of terroir.
CEO Bo Barrett described the acquisition as a long-term investment: “We’re not focused on volume, but on achieving the highest possible quality. For us, this is a continuation of our legacy – and the beginning of a new chapter.”
Winemaker Matt Crafton echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that the new vineyard is not merely an expansion, but an opportunity to further deepen the expression of Chardonnay’s unique character in each vintage.
With this strategic move, Chateau Montelena reinforces its position as a leader in California’s premium white wine segment, reaffirming its commitment to quality, tradition, and sustainable growth.
