From Blogger to Wine Expert: Laura Hadland’s Journey Through Vineyards and Education
Having found a love of writing about the wine world through her blog, Extreme Housewifery, which she has been writing since 2008, Laura has embarked on a path of passionate, self-led education in order to reach a point in her career where she can write with authority and interest about such a wide range of topics. She dedicates a lot of time to visiting vineyards and interviewing industry professionals to keep her knowledge up-to-date and relevant to the contemporary audience. More than ten years of experience as a vineyard volunteer ensures she has got up close and personal with every aspect of the wine-making process, as well as leading hundreds of vineyard tours and tastings to ensure that she can present her knowledge in the most accessible way. Qualifications include self-funded WSET Levels 1, 2 & 3 in 2018-19 and a Level 2 Award in Principles of Customer Service in Hospitality, Leisure, Travel and Tourism mean that her experience also has a formal grounding, both in the winery and in customer-facing scenarios.
Breaking the Mold of Traditional Wine Writing
This background has led Laura to become a leading source of expertise on wine, winemaking and wine tourism outside of the slightly rigid mould of traditional wine writing. Taking Laura’s more recent work into consideration, her piece for Ferment Magazine in December 2025, What’s eating Guildford’s grapes?, for example, gave a dedicated beer-drinking readership an insight into the Wines of Sussex PDO and what makes the wines of that region special. Meanwhile, writing for Glug Magazine in November 2025, her deep dive into unusual trellising methods, All Shapes and Sizes, was anything but dry, highlighting some of the quirkier choices open to the more adventurous wine tourist. Finally, a quick scroll through the back catalogue of Laura’s Vineyard Magazine features shows her range and adaptability as a writer who can effortlessly engage previously untapped demographics.
