Kristian Kielmayer #122
To make the world of wine interesting, approachable, and thought-provoking
Wine and spirit consultant and educator Kristian Kielmayer works to make the world of wine interesting, approachable, and thought-provoking. Kristian’s teaching philosophy, as an educator for the Weinakademie Austria and the nominated educator for Hungary’s largest wine school, is “learning by teaching” – an approach that has motivated hundreds of students annually in classrooms and beyond. Kristian brings to his work a combination of practical knowledge and academic rigour, having a technical degree in winemaking, a BA in economics, the WSET Diploma, a certified sommelier by CMS, and the esteemed Weinakademiker title. Along with great knowledge of beer, saké, and spirits, his certifications as a Sherry and Rioja Educator highlight his varied love of beverages and cuisine. Kristian has influence far outside of the classroom. He co-authored Wines of Hungary: Terroirs and Varieties and is getting ready to publish his forthcoming book, Natural Wines of Hungary. He writes for Vince, the biggest wine and food magazine in Hungary. Kristian investigates the junction of wine, culture, and narrative via print magazines, blogs, and podcasts in both English and Hungarian, and his conviction in closing cultural gaps has inspired original ideas, including matching Hungarian wines with Mexican chocolate for a speaking engagement in Mexico City. These intimate times of communication highlight Kristian’s dedication to unite people via wine.
Shaping Hungary's Wine Landscape: Expertise in PDO Creation and Global Wine Judging
Working with the Ministry of Agriculture of Hungary, Kristian, a reputable consultant, has created new PDO appellations including Mura, Kőszeg, Sümeg, and Füred.
His expertise is also sought after in the competitive arena of wine judging, with roles at the Concours Mondial de Bruxelles, Mundus Vini, and other prestigious competitions.
Inspiring Through Wine: Journey as Educator, Photographer, and Cultural Ambassador
Kristian’s commitment to encouraging success also extends to his students, whose successes he honours as his own since he believes that his direction and inspiration reflect their results.
Celebrated internationally for his contributions, Kristian won the OIV Centenary Photo Contest with a striking image addressing climate change – a very personal honour that highlights his relationship to nature and the world of wine. Passionate photographer Kristian enjoys sharing his visual interpretations of the beauty of nature, especially the vineyards that capture the harmony between mother nature and human work. Wine is for him culture – a universal language of passion, creation, and connection.
From the OIV conferences on volcanic wines and Tokaj masterclasses to international trade events like Prowein, Kristian’s speaking engagements cover continents. Reaching out to inspire others with its narrative, he supports wine as a cultural ambassador. Kristian aims to inspire and understand every person by means of his words, images, or lessons so that every person feels appreciated and capable of achieving.
Looking forward, Kristian hopes to pursue a PhD in wine sensory science, exploring the nuances of tasting and sensory evaluation, after graduating with a master’s degree in international wine marketing. Kristian keeps bringing people closer to the dynamic world of wine since he is committed to education and loves to share the beauty of wine with the world.
