Glenelly Estate #105
Glenelly Estate: French Elegance in the Heart of Stellenbosch
Glenelly Estate, located in Stellenbosch, South Africa, was founded in 2003 by May-Eliane de Lencquesaing, former owner of the renowned Bordeaux Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande. At the age of 78, she purchased part of Ida’s Valley, a historic farm dating back to 1682, originally granted by Simon van der Stel. Her vision was to create a winery that combines French winemaking traditions with the unique soils and climate of South Africa.
The 1783 stamp on the Glenelly wine labels signifies nearly 250 years of the family’s involvement in the wine industry which continues into the 21st century at Glenelly. Their ancestor, Elie Miailhe, was granted the title of ‘royal wine broker’ in 1783. May de Lencquesaing (née Miailhe), continues this tradition together with her grandchildren.
Vineyards and Winemaking Approach
The estate spans 123 hectares on the southern slopes of Simonsberg Mountain, planted with Bordeaux grape varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay, and Syrah. Glenelly is designed as a gravity-flow winery, allowing grapes to be processed gently. Hand sorting, fermentation with native yeasts, and careful aging in French oak barrels ensure that the unique character of the terroir is preserved. Chief Winemaker Jérôme Likwaba and consultant Luke O’Cuinneagain emphasize minimal intervention, combining French tradition with the South African climate to produce wines with elegant structure and expressive flavors.
Wines, Style, and Social Responsibility
Glenelly Estate’s flagship wines include:
- Lady May – a rich Cabernet Sauvignon with blackcurrant and liquorice notes;
- Estate Reserve Red Blend – with Syrah;
- Estate Reserve Chardonnay – creamy, with apple and pear aromas;
- Glass Collection – unoaked wines highlighting purity and finesse.
The estate actively practices regenerative viticulture, caring for soil health and minimizing its environmental footprint. Glenelly also supports the local community, including educational initiatives for employees’ children, and welcomes visitors for tastings, cellar tours, and dining at The Vine Bistro.
Glenelly Estate is where French winemaking heritage meets South African spirit, producing wines that combine character, elegance, and a true expression of their unique terroir.
