Egge Gård: Pioneering Norwegian Grape Winemaking

Egge Gård is a trailblazing Norwegian farm winery redefining the country’s cool-climate potential. Located in the fertile Lier Valley just 30 minutes from Oslo, the estate has long been renowned for premium apple products and traditional-method ciders. Building on this expertise, the team began planting grapevines in 2010 – a bold step in a country not traditionally associated with viticulture.

Starting with 2,500 vines and expanding to more than 21,000 today, Egge Gård has positioned itself at the forefront of Norway’s emerging grape wine movement. At present, the winery remains the only Norwegian producer with grape wine commercially available on the market, making it a true category pioneer.

Egge Gård is the only Norwegian winery whose wines are officially represented on the national market under the state monopoly system.

Cool-Climate Vision

Norwegian grape growing is still in its infancy, with an estimated 15–20 producers planting vines in recent years. Egge Gård works primarily with cold-resistant varieties such as Solaris, alongside Rondo, Blaufränkisch, Riesling and Sauvignon Gris.

The combination of long Nordic daylight hours, proximity to the sea, and moraine soils rich in stone, clay and sand gives the wines their hallmark profile: bright acidity, purity of fruit and pronounced freshness.

From Apples to Sparkling Excellence

While the farm’s heritage is deeply rooted in apples and award-winning cider, Egge Gård has successfully transferred its sparkling expertise into grape wine production. Its traditional-method sparkling wine Egge ONE, first released in 2014, reflects both technical ambition and cool-climate precision.

The winery collaborates with an internationally trained winemaker educated in New Zealand and experienced in Tuscany, while also drawing on consultations with German specialists and Nordic cool-climate experts. This global knowledge base is reinforced by the team’s strong sommelier background and more than two decades of experience in wine importing and product development.

Beyond grape wines, the estate is also known for ISEPLE, an ice cider inspired by ice wine philosophy. Produced by cryo-concentration of freshly pressed apple juice, it requires 25–30 kg of apples per liter and delivers remarkable natural sweetness balanced by vibrant acidity.

Wine Tourism & Future Outlook

Egge Gård is actively developing wine tourism in cooperation with national travel platforms such as Visit Norway and Visit Oslo. Visitors can tour the vineyards and orchards, explore production facilities and barrel rooms, and enjoy curated tastings of the estate’s wines, ciders and spirits.

Although Norwegian grape wine production remains small and export is still on the horizon, the winery is preparing for future international expansion as vineyard maturity improves. With strong domestic recognition, growing plantings and a clear pioneering role, Egge Gård stands at the forefront of Norway’s emerging wine identity – a compelling new destination on the global wine travel map.
