A winery born within the walls of a centuries old monastery

Perched dramatically on the slopes of the Tajo gorge in Ronda, Descalzos Viejos is one of Spain’s most atmospheric wine estates – a place where history, landscape and contemporary winemaking converge with rare harmony. The estate occupies the restored 16th‑century Monastery of the Trinitarios Descalzos, a site whose origins stretch back even further to a small hermitage gifted by the Catholic Monarchs. Today, surrounded by olive groves, ancient oaks and three natural parks, the bodega stands as one of Ronda’s most captivating cultural and oenological landmarks.

After centuries of abandonment, earthquakes, landslides and decay, the monastery was rescued in 1998 by the Retamero and Salesi families, who embarked on a meticulous restoration. Their work preserved original architectural elements – including the miraculous frescoes discovered beneath layers of lime and humidity –  while transforming the former church into a serene, light‑filled winery. Gardens, orchards, ponds and fountains were also revived, returning the estate to its historic splendour.

A landscape that shapes the wines

The estate comprises 16 hectares, including 10 hectares of vineyards planted on the upper and mid slopes of the Tajo at around 650 metres. The Mediterranean climate, moderated by altitude and Atlantic influence, creates ideal conditions for slow, balanced ripening. Key varieties include Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Garnacha, Graciano, Petit Verdot, Merlot, and Chardonnay – each expressing the rugged limestone soils and dramatic topography of the Serranía de Ronda.

A portfolio of character and precision

Descalzos Viejos produces a distinctive collection of wines, each bearing the imprint of its singular setting:

  • DV
  • DV+
  • DV Minima
  • DV Chardonnay
  • DV Las Santas IUSTA
  • DV Las Santas RUFINA
  • DV Aires

These cuvées reflect a philosophy of minimal intervention, respect for heritage and deep sensitivity to the estate’s unique terroir.

A destination of rare beauty

Few wineries in Europe offer such an extraordinary sense of place. Visitors arrive to sweeping views over the Ronda valley, the iconic bullring nearby, and the dramatic cliffs that have inspired artists for centuries.

The restored monastery – with its frescoed altar, vaulted ceilings and tranquil gardens – has become one of the city’s most cherished attractions, blending cultural heritage with contemporary viticulture.

A family story rooted in land and life

Descalzos Viejos is not only a winery but a living home. The Salesi and Retamero families, together with their loyal four legged companions, have shaped the estate’s identity with warmth and authenticity.

Their story – from planting the first vines to restoring the monastery stone by stone – is woven into the fabric of the wines and the spirit of the place.
