A Sun-Blessed Wine Region at the Edge of Austria
Burgenland, Austria’s easternmost federal state, is one of Central Europe’s most distinctive wine regions. Shaped by the warm, continental Pannonian climate, the area enjoys nearly 300 days of sunshine each year, creating ideal conditions for viticulture and making it one of the country’s most dynamic destinations for wine lovers.
Located around the UNESCO World Heritage site Lake Neusiedl, Burgenland combines vineyards with extraordinary landscapes, historic towns, castles, and natural reserves. The region’s warm climate, lakeside scenery, and relaxed atmosphere attract visitors seeking authentic wine experiences, outdoor activities, and cultural heritage.
A Region Where Wine, Nature and Hospitality Meet
Burgenland represents a vibrant meeting point of sun-filled vineyards, unique terroirs, and authentic wine tourism experiences. From the mineral elegance of Blaufränkisch to the world-class sweetness of Ruster Ausbruch, every bottle reflects the region’s landscape and traditions.
For travelers seeking both discovery and pleasure, Burgenland offers an unforgettable journey through Austria’s sunniest wine region.
Terroir Diversity and Iconic Wines
Today, Burgenland is widely recognized as Austria’s leading red-wine region while also producing refined white wines and some of the world’s most remarkable sweet wines.
Burgenland’s wine identity is defined by its diverse soils and microclimates, which shape a wide spectrum of styles. The region is internationally renowned for Blaufränkisch, a grape that thrives in the mineral soils of Eisenberg, producing elegant wines with vibrant acidity and distinctive minerality.
In Mittelburgenland, deep loam soils create powerful, fruit-driven reds often referred to as the “home of Blaufränkisch.” Meanwhile, the slopes of the Leithaberg combine limestone and slate, providing an exceptional terroir for both refined white wines – such as Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc, and Grüner Veltliner – and structured reds.
Equally legendary are Burgenland’s sweet wines. In the lakeside town of Rust, the historic specialty Ruster Ausbruch represents one of the great noble-sweet wines of the world. Further south, the Seewinkel area east of Lake Neusiedl, with its unique network of shallow lakes known as “Zicklacken”, creates the humid conditions needed for noble rot, enabling the production of exceptional Beerenauslese and Trockenbeerenauslese wines.
A Destination for Wine Tourism and Cultural Discovery
Burgenland has developed into one of Austria’s most welcoming wine tourism destinations. Visitors can explore scenic cycling routes through vineyards, taste wines directly with producers, and enjoy modern winery architecture alongside centuries-old cellars.
The region offers a rich cultural landscape, including historic castles, museums, and charming wine villages, as well as vibrant festivals celebrating wine and gastronomy. The shores of Lake Neusiedl provide opportunities for sailing, birdwatching, and outdoor recreation, making Burgenland equally attractive to families and dedicated wine enthusiasts.
This combination of wine culture, natural beauty, and hospitality creates an immersive experience where travelers can discover the region’s terroir through both taste and place.
