The Vision and Foundation of Adega Mayor

Adega Mayor, inaugurated in 2007, is the viticultural project of the Nabeiro Group, where the art of winemaking meets the architectural brilliance of Álvaro Siza Vieira, Portugal’s most prominent modernist architect. Located in Campo Maior, Alto Alentejo, the winery spans vineyards across Herdade das Argamassas, Herdade da Godinha, Herdade da Marrada Alta, Monte do Firmino, and Monte da Pina. From its inception, Adega Mayor became a reference in Portuguese wine tourism as the first author winery built in Portugal.

Inspired by his passion for wine and his homeland, Rui Nabeiro dreamed of creating a winery that would stand as an architectural landmark. With his granddaughter, Rita Nabeiro, this dream was realized. Designed by Siza Vieira, the winery’s modern, minimalist design seamlessly integrates into the landscape, offering panoramic views of vineyards, olive groves, and the Serra de Portalegre.

Growth and Sustainability

Over 18 years, Adega Mayor has achieved steady growth, both in Portugal and internationally, driven by its close relationships with customers, partners, and visitors, as well as its unwavering commitment to environmental and social sustainability. At the heart of its operations is a dedication to regenerative agricultural practices and support for the local community, with Francisco Pessoa leading the viticulture team. His work ensures a deep respect for the environment, soil health, and the balance essential for sustainable and regenerative farming, making sustainability a core part of Adega Mayor’s DNA.

Winemaking Excellence

Guided by values of quality, innovation, and proximity, Adega Mayor has earned numerous national and international accolades for its wines and olive oils, including recognition from Decanter, Wine Enthusiast, and Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate.

Winemaker Carlos Rodrigues, with international experience in Australia and Chile, has led the winery since 2012. His innovative approach has resulted in award-winning wines, such as the Pai Chão Branco, named Best White Wine of Portugal in 2023. The winery’s unique terroir, influenced by the São Mamede Mountain range, imparts freshness and minerality to its wines, blending Alentejo’s body and complexity with the softness of granite soils.

Pioneering Wine Tourism and Innovation

Since its inception, Adega Mayor has been a pioneer in Portuguese wine tourism, offering immersive experiences that showcase the essence of Alentejo. In 2024, the winery expanded its offerings with new activities, including Wine Tasting with Chocolates, the Wine Course, and Tasting with the Winemaker. These join existing experiences like the Winemaker Experience for a Day, Wine Picnic, Visit with Tasting, Visit with Tasting and Tapas, and the Mayor Visit with Wine Workshop. Adega Mayor’s 350 hectares of oak forests, riverside galleries, and vineyards provide a stunning backdrop for these activities. From the panoramic terrace, visitors can admire the vineyards, olive groves, and distant views of Spain and the Serra de Portalegre. With a contemporary vision, Adega Mayor continues to innovate, combining tradition with modernity to create wines and experiences that capture the essence of Alentejo while looking toward the future.
